We are frequently asked what is involved in wet tanning. Wet tanning is a complete process in which the cape or hide is not allowed to dry out until mounted. Once tanned, the cape or hide is placed in a plastic bag, frozen and shipped to the customer. The cape or hide can then either be kept frozen for later mounting or thawed for immediate use. The cape or hide is tanned so there is no spoilage, but you need to have it mounted on the manikin before it dries. Wet tanning provides great stretch without the bother of having to rehydrate and re-stretch the cape or hide. Also, there is considerably greater shelf-life with wet versus dry tans. Additionally, the cost of wet tanning is less expensive.
Dry tanning is a process where the hide is dried and oiled so it soft, pliable, and supple. Dry tans work great for throws, rugs, bed spreads and decorations.
(Wholesale prices available to professional taxidermist only).
